Incoming Freshman Sends Aid to Lost Boys of Sudan
Meira Kowalski will be entering the IB program this fall. As an 8th grader at Shorecrest Preparatory School this year, she produced a National History Day documentary about the 26,000 Sudanese “Lost Boys” who were orphaned and forced to flee civil war. They died in great numbers and suffered terrible hardships.
During her project, Meira interviewed Joseph Deng, a Lost Boy himself who now is an adult living in Florida. He started his own organization to provide medical supplies to those in need in Southern Sudan. She was inspired by his work and held a medicine drive at her school, collecting over 150 pounds of medicines! “One bottle of Imodium saves five lives in South Sudan,” she notes.
After learning that Mr. Deng pays the expensive costs to ship the medicines himself, Meira started a GoFundMe campaign (https://www.gofundme.com/wzjqunjg) to help cover the costs of shipping. She has raised $3170 to date, far surpassing her original $1500 goal.
